Cologne, Perfume and Fragrance: What the Words Mean
Cologne is the everyday word for a men’s fragrance. Technically, an eau de cologne is a light concentration named after the German city of Cologne, but most colognes today are sold as eau de toilette or eau de parfum.
Perfume is the general word for any fragrance, and “men’s perfume” usually means a stronger formula.
Fragrance covers all of them. Searching for men’s fragrance, mens perfume or cologne perfume leads to the same shelf, so focus on the scent family and the concentration on the bottle. Reviewed October 2026.
Men’s Fragrance Families
- Fresh and citrus colognes use bergamot, grapefruit and mint. They are clean and easy for the office and hot days. Shop fresh fragrances.
- Aquatic colognes use sea salt and cool musk for an airy, casual feel.
- Aromatic colognes use lavender, sage and herbs for a polished, classic scent.
- Woody colognes use cedar, sandalwood and vetiver. They are the most versatile family and a safe first bottle. Shop woody fragrances.
- Spicy colognes use pepper, cardamom and cinnamon, and stand out at night.
- Leather colognes are smoky and rugged, and best for evenings.
- Amber and oriental colognes use resin, vanilla and musk for rich, long-lasting warmth. Shop amber fragrances.
- Sweet and gourmand colognes use vanilla and tonka. Shop vanilla and gourmand perfumes.
How a Cologne Develops
Top notes like citrus and herbs fade in the first 15 to 30 minutes. Heart notes like lavender and spice form the character and last a few hours. Base notes like woods, amber and musk stay longest. Wear a cologne for an hour before you decide.

Concentrations Compared
- Parfum: 20 to 30 percent fragrance oil or more. Strongest, closest to the skin.
- Eau de Parfum: 15 to 20 percent fragrance oil. Rich, many hours.
- Eau de Toilette: 5 to 15 percent fragrance oil. Lighter, for daytime.
- Eau de Cologne: 2 to 5 percent fragrance oil. Lightest, fades fast.
These ranges are general, and brands vary.
How Many Sprays of Cologne, and How to Make It Last
Two to four sprays is plenty. Use two with a strong eau de parfum and up to four with a light eau de toilette. Apply to clean, moisturized skin at the neck, chest and inner wrists, and dab instead of rubbing. More sprays do not last longer, only stronger. Store the bottle somewhere cool and dark, not in a bathroom.
